March 2, 2017
March 1st has brought with it the beginning of the Lenten Season. How soon we move through the Season of Ordinary Time (a season "in which so much happens” as the poet Marie Howe has wisely said) and are greeted by yet another. Lent is often a time marked by fasting, almsgiving, or sacrifice of some sort to cleanse or purify the soul. While the season can feel rather austere, there is a beauty that comes through this journey - a return to simplicity; a return to our true being; a return home to God and self.
The scholar and preacher, Walter Brueggemann, has wisely discerned that to repent is to remember and return. I hope that whatever self-discipline or practice you engage will lead you to remember who you are and who God is, and to return to such goodness. Perhaps this is a time to give generously to discover that you can live without money; perhaps this is a time to open your home to the other to discover the beauty and family of community; perhaps this is a time to trust in God’s Love and Grace - letting go of this idea that you need to earn the Love of God, and finally trusting that you are radically and endlessly Loved as you are.
I hope that your Lenten discipline will lead you to remember your goodness and God’s goodness, and I hope that you will join together in Sunday morning worship that we may be nurtured and encourage one another in making this beautiful journey.
Grace and Peace in your Lenten Journey.
PARENTS - The Christian Ed Board would like your input about this
year's Vacation Bible School. We'd like to expand to 2 days (probably
Friday and Saturday) in June. On Friday, the preschool would hear a
Bible story while the older children listen to church members and
others talk about their volunteer experiences. Both groups would make
a craft also. On Saturday, we'll
have a variety of hands-on projects for all the children. Some
project ideas we've discussed are making birthday bags for the food
cupboard, making blankets for babies at area hospitals, working on the
community garden out back, etc. If you have any ideas for projects,
please email or call me.
This Sunday the children will hear a story about Jesus healing a leper
and make a fun craft. Next week, the story will be about 4 friends
helping a crippled friend get close to Jesus. Our teacher for the
next 4 weeks will be Mrs. Gilles.
Movie night will return this month. The date hasn't been chosen yet,
but we're looking at the 17th or the 24th.
Blessings, Vickie 440-285-3236 440-478-6745 email@example.com
Book of Joy:
Wednesday, March 8th, we're gathering in the parlor at 6:30 to discuss the first four pillars of Joy in the book
The youth event was a blast last Sunday as we turned the hallway upstairs into a bowling alley to create: Crab-Walk Bowling! Have you ever had the opportunity to play defense in a game of bowling???
Friends of Refugees:
First Presbyterian Church of Willoughby will host a meeting on Monday, March 13th at 7:00pm to lay out further plans and opportunities to assist the refugee population in the Cleveland area. The faith groups have been partnering with US Together of Cleveland Heights and Catholic Charities of Lakewood. If you would like to learn more or find a way to engage, you're welcome to speak with Rev. Chris or Roz Kvet.
Have you been considering joining Pilgrim Christian Church as a member? Rev. Chris is taking interest from the congregation, preparing to host another session of membership classes. These are never mandatory to join the church, just helpful to make your membership more meaningful.
If you have pondered any of the following questions:
What is the difference between a "friend" of the church and a "member"? What are these denominations about? What is our polity and governance structure? What is the theology of the church (that's a fun one!)? How can I become engaged in the ministries of the church?
then, please contact Rev. Chris and share your interest in such a class. The current dates considered for hosting these classes would be Sundays, March 26 and April 2.
Friendship Guild will host Women's Fun Day on Saturday, March 18th from 1-5 at the home of Barbara Inderlied. Please RSVP to Jan Stewart at 285-9292 or 440-567-4408.
The Consistory Retreat has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 25th from 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM in the parlor.
