The recommendation for call will be presented for vote at the Consistory meeting on Monday, November 27, 2017. The result of the Consistory vote will be sent out via email on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.
David was kind enough to provide the following biography to share information about himself and his family.
David E. Loar and his wife Martha married on Earth Day in 1989.
Martha is a first grade teacher at Old Trail School, an independent school that is located within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Martha grew up in the Disciples of Christ church and was DOC until their marriage. She is from Crossville, Tennessee on the Cumberland Plateau.
The Loars’ daughter Kate was born in 1990. She is the Director of Development for the St. Louis Fashion Fund, a non-profit restoring the old St. Louis garment district, an incubator for fashion/garment businesses, and a setting for up-and-coming fashion designers to be in residency for a few years
Their daughter Molly, born in 1993, is finishing her Bachelor’s degree in sociology at Kent State - Stark. She works for the YMCA in an after school program in Stow and runs a soccer program for multiple pre-schools.
David’s father was a UCC minister (Evangelical & Reformed before the 1957 merger). David grew up in southern Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio, graduating from high school in Sandusky. His family was centered in Wauseon, OH, my grandparents lived, over all those where. His mother's parents were very active in First Christian Church in Wauseon where his mother's funeral was held in 2014.
David got his BA from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana; and his Master of Divinity degree from Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He has served
churches in southern Illinois; Mansfield, Ohio; Crossville, TN; was also on the staff of the SE Conference of the UCC; and from 1995-2014 was the senior pastor of Fairlawn-West UCC in Akron.
Since retiring, he has worked part-time at a funeral home, been a beekeeper and gardener, mentored a young man and a refugee family, and served on various boards of local social service agencies.
David enjoys swimming, yoga and hiking. He says for him being next to heaven is canoeing and camping on a whitewater river.
He has traveled over the years on behalf of the wider church to the former East Germany, Hungary, Nicaragua, England, and Egypt.
He has completed the process to be recognized jointly as a UCC and DOC pastor.
In his final year in Crossville, TN, he brought together a small UCC congregation and a DOC congregation who merged officially a year after he left. He also served as the UCC representative on the board of the Tennessee Region of the Christian Church.
David likes to sing, and guarantees you will hear him do so – a cappella! - as part of worship leadership. He enjoys reading history and is an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist.
Parents and grandparents - Christian Education will present a Christmas pageant this year. The date will be either Dec. 17th or 24th (still checking with elders). If your children or grandchildren will be at church, they are welcome to join us. More information will be available in the coming weeks.
Christian Ed is looking for 4 new board members. If you are interested in working with us or know someone who is, please contact me.
Chi Rho met on November 5th and filled 5 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We also enjoyed hallway bowling, foosball, and air hockey. Heather Penrod and her helpers, Mykaeyla and Samara, delivered the boxes to Thompson Methodist Church this past Sunday.
Blessings, Vickie Craig
