Children's Ministry

Chi Rho will meet on Sunday, October 22nd, after coffee hour for a round of mini golf at Chip's Club House and then lunch.  We hope everyone will be able to join us.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be looking for nursery volunteers to assist during church.  I'm also looking for teachers for the 1st to 3rd grade class as well as the Chi Rho (4th grade and up) class.  We also need substitutes and assistants for all the classes. No one will be asked to teach/help every Sunday; you decide how much time you have to give. It's a great way to get to know the children in our church.

Blessings, Vickie

INTERIM SEARCH UPDATE

Leadership has received a number of resumes from potential interim ministers from both the DOC and UCC and is beginning the process of initial interviews with those candidates this week.

We will continue to update everyone as we progress through this process.

Please continue to be in prayer for wisdom and discernment for all involved in this work; for patience for the PCC family; and, most of all, thanksgiving that God is working to send us just the right person for this new time.

Peace Cranes

The Peace Cranes took flight on Tuesday October 11th and are on their way to the First Christian Church in Clark County, Las Vegas, Nevada. They are expected to arrive on October 17th. I have spoken with Senior Pastor Steve Willis and he and his congregation are touched by our kindness and they are anxiously awaiting their arrival. He explained that two other churches use their church building and he plans to share the cranes with them. I will update you again after their arrival and when I hear back from Pastor Willis. I believe that this is a very special way to be in fellowship with a church far away and in need of peace and healing.

Community Pasta Dinner Report

A big thank you to everyone who supported the October 14 pasta dinner sponsored by the Membership Committee.

We served 59 adults and 5 children and raised $630.  The total included several donations; thank you to those donors.  These proceeds will be split between the steeple fund and our general operations fund.

We donated food which was left over to several organizations:  Next Step received pasta, salad, and bread for their dinner.  The County Home received a case of salad, and Project Hope received pasta, salad, and dessert.

Membership committee members would also like to thank those of you who went out of your way to compliment the dinner and setting.  Your compliments and acknowledgements are sincerely appreciated!

Stewardship annual campaign

It’s that time of year!  Stewardship annual campaign packages were mailed this week, along with your quarterly church contribution statements.  Take some time and think about how you want to participate.  Remember that your giving is for needs of the church and your pledge helps us to plan our activities and finances for the upcoming year - - but it’s also a key part of growing our faith and sharing thanks for all that we have been given.  Members of the Stewardship Committee are available to answer any questions you may have.  We’d like to have all pledge sheets returned to the church by November 12.  Place them in the offering plate, give them to a committee member, or drop them in the mail.  Also plan to join us Sunday November 12 after service in Fellowship Hall for our Stewardship Celebration potluck!

HALLOWEEN

Pilgrim Christian Church has this amazing and fun outreach program of giving away candy on the night of Trick or Treat (Tuesday, October 31 from 5:30-7:30pm). It's a perfect way to be present in the community and to be a good neighbor. There are several ways that you can participate in this event if you would like:

Donate Candy:

We have passed out over 500 bags of candy in one night, so we can use all the candy we can get! Please bring the candy in and drop it off in the office by October 29.

Help with Trick or Treat Night:

Tuesday, October 31, there is an opportunity to help set up (tables, cider, candy, and any decorations) during the day. Then, beginning at 5pm, you are invited to dress up and come to be a joyful presence to hand out candy with about 500 costumed kids!!! If you are interested in participating in the set up and/or passing out of candy, please contact Lois Wheeler.

Our Blessed Guides
Written by Richard Floyd

"Beloved, do not imitate what is evil but imitate what is good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God." - 3 John 11

Our culture prizes originality. No one wants to be considered an imitation! But in a number of places in the Bible we are admonished to model ourselves after someone or something, either a person or an ideal.

It makes sense if you think about it. None of us is born fully formed; we are constantly being shaped by the world around us.

As I write this I am babysitting my 9 month-old granddaughter. Her most salient attribute is her curiosity. Every moment she is taking it all in; wide-eyed she watches everything around her.

She will learn about the world from others, primarily her parents, but also from other family members, from teachers at school and people at church.

This is how we all learn and grow at whatever age. Our moral character is largely determined over time by what we choose to imitate and what we choose not to imitate.

And it reassures me to know that I don't have to make up my moral world from scratch; to realize that there are reliable guides and blueprints for living well.

Some of these guides are in books, but the most important ones are the ones we have known in person.

I invite you to take a few moments to recall in your mind's eye the people who have had the most influence on who you have become. What did you learn from them? What about them did you imitate? Then thank God for them!

Prayer

We thank you, God, for all the faithful guides you have given us to imitate.

Opportunities to Serve

There are many, many opportunities to serve within PCC, including serving as an Elder, Deacon, member of Consistory or boards or committees including Trustees, Membership, Childen’s and Youth Programs, Missions, Stewardship, etc.  And don’t forget all our musical groups!

Assistance is always needed and welcomed from everyone who wishes to serve and share his or her gifts and input in the service of the Lord.   Opportunities can be found in the weekly bulletin, the weekly e-newsletter, and the monthly Visitor.  If you need information, any Elder, officer, or deacon will be happy to help.
